Come as a stranger, leave as a friend

Pastoral Ponderings – January 2025

Do not say, ‘Why were the former days better than these?’
For it is not from wisdom that you ask this.
Ecclesiastes 7:10

When we learn not to regret the past, we change our past because we change the way we look at it. This is important for anyone who lives with regret. If regret from our past helps someone, then those regretful experiences become something exceedingly useful.

I love the song “Bless the Broken Road,” sung by Rascal Flatts. It is a love song, but the words point us toward a significant truth.

“…every long-lost dream led me to where you are,

others who broke my heart,

they were like Northern stars pointing me

on my way into your loving arms,

this much I know is true,

that God blessed the broken road

that led me straight to you!

As we come upon the New Year, let’s not look back with regret. The month of January is filled with scripture containing imagery about light and stars. Bright lights brough healing into a dark world, light which contains a guiding force. The prophet Isaiah wrote “Arise, shine for your light has come and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.” There is nothing we have ever done which can separate us from the love and light of God.

No regrets my friends. You are a sky full of stars!

Happy New Year!

Pastor Val
